Chapter 7: Is Forgiveness, Forgetting?

The ride back up to Sayreville was a long one tonight.  Jon was alone and had the radio on.  Finally, he heard his song - from start to finish without interruption or distraction.  He liked it, hell, he loved it.  To hear himself on the radio was a high like he's never felt before.  He could not believe it.  He was on the fucking radio.  Amazing!!!  It didn't make him feel any less alone.  He has had such an amazing day, and Liz wasn't there to share it with him.

He finally made it home at 7:45.  He forgot he was supposed to go see his dad and hoped it wasn't too late.  He needed  a haircut and no one cut his hair but his dad.  Jon walked in and his dad was at the dinner table drinking a beer and reading the newspaper.  Jon greeted his dad, "Hi pops."  His dad looked over his shoulder at him and said," Hi, son.  I heard you on the radio today."  Jon was one big smile, ear to ear.  His dad went on to say, "Your mother said you were coming in to the shop today?  What happened?  Are you too famous for your pops now?"  Jon pulled out a chair and sat with his dad.  Matt was on the living room floor watching Simon & Simon and Anthony was with mom, wherever that was.  His dad went on to tell him that Lizzy had stopped by earlier and she wanted him to call as soon as he got home.  Jon told his dad he'd call her, just so dad would stop harping about it.  Jon knows he'll call her and they'll talk.  He just wasn't ready.

A few moments later Mrs. B and Anthony walk in the house.  They had been at the grocery store and Mrs. B had to take Anthony to the eye doctor.  Seventeen and no driver's license irritated Mr and Mrs. B - but what could they do?  Living in an area where there is mass transit, a need for a drivers license seems pointless.  But all the cool kids had one.  Mrs. B asked all the men in her life what they had wanted for dinner.  "And not pizza!', she says.

"I think breakfast sounds good for dinner, what do you think boys?" says Mr. B.   Matt got all excited and said, "Yeah, let's have pancakes for dinner.  With lots and lots of syrup!"  Mrs. B told her family that it was decided, they would have breakfast for dinner.  In the kitchen she started to whip up some, eggs, pancakes and waffle - with bacon and toast on the side.  Jon went in to the kitchen to use the telephone.  He looked at is mom and said, "I need to get this out of the way."  She knew he was talking about calling Liz, and she felt so bad for him.  For them.  She knows how much they love one another and it pained her to see her boy in pain.  Jon dialed the number and walked into the adjoining dining room - as far as the phone cord would let him go.

Liz answered after 4 rings, "Hello."  Jon paused and finally said, "Hey."  Liz's heart started to race.  She didn't think he would call, but he did.  "How are you doing?", she inquires, really concerned.  Sine they haven't seen each other in a few days, he racing mind got the best of her.  She really believed that Jon may have started getting on with life, moving on without her.  Jon hesitantly told her that he had been doing fine and keeping busy.  Liz begins to tell him that she had heard his song on the radio and she was very proud of him.  She had no idea he could write like that.  Jon inquired, "What do you mean write like that?'  He took offense to what she had said.  Almost like he didn't have it in him to write about a topic that's so dark and often not discussed.  "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like that.  I guess I'm just wondering where you drew the inspiration from, that's all.  Quick to respond, Jon tells her "All the times I have ridden the train into the city, I see runaways all over.  Displaced youth with no hope in their eyes.  That's all the inspiration that I needed."  Liz tried to wrap her head around it and figured right now it's just best if she supports it and encourages him.
She finally had the chance to tell him, "I loved it.  Your voice is amazing on it."  Jon was slowly letting his guard down, but he was really pissed at her still.  He still couldn't believe she would do that to him.
Not wanting to be on the phone all night, Jon put an end to the small talk and said, "Let's cut the bullshit here Liz - is there anything else you need to tell me?  Or is there anything else that you SHOULD tell me."  He asked her not really caring what her answer would be at this point.  He kicks back in the chair and puts his feet up on the chair across from him and he hears his mother saying, "Take your boot's of the chair and stop leaning back in the chair."  Jon quickly put his feet down and sat up straight in the chair.
On the other end of the phone Liz was telling him that there was nothing else that she had to tell him.  She had no more secrets and that if it made him feel better, she hasn't seen Rick since the night it happened.  No that didn't make Jon feel better, how could it?  He patiently waited for a pause in her conversation and simply asked, "How could you do this to me?'  There was a pause, a moment of silence.  Liz really didn't know what to say, all she know is that she was lonely and buzzed.  She knew that wasn't a good excuse, but it's the only one she had.  "Babe, I never meant to hurt you and I didn't set out to make out with Rick.  I just want to say, we were at the beach having a few drinks and it kind of set in that you were gone and I missed you SO much.  My buzz didn't help at all.  I started to cry and Rick came over to comfort me.  It felt so nice to be hugged and comforted, you were gone for so long and before you left you were so busy, I missed YOU Jon.  You!!  He started to rub my back and eventually leaned into me and kissed me. One thing led to another.  I kissed him back.  It was just kissing and heavy petting.  That it.  No more!  I swear."  Jon tried to absorb what he was hearing and it wasn't sinking in.  He couldn't imagine it, he couldn't even think about it without getting sick to his stomach.

Calmly he asks her, "How would you feel if I told you I had done all that with some chick I met in Miami?  And I met alot."  He really wanted to know, he wondered how she would say she would react.  Liz really didn't know what to say.  She went from sitting on her bed to pacing her bedroom floor.  Was Jon going to tell her that he did something like that?  Jon sat silent, waiting for her to answer.  "Liz, what would you do?", as patient as possible.

Liz knew there was a right way and a wrong way to answer this question, and she also knew it needed to come from her heart.  She said, "I can honestly tell you that I would be devastated, heartbroken.  Did something like that happen while you were in Miami?"  He was flabbergasted, "Liz, do you really need to ask me that question, REALLY?"  He was getting upset.  By this time, he was sitting on the edge of the dining room chair and was getting ready to pace himself.  He was getting irritated and was starting to feel like he was wasting time.  "Liz, I have done nothing like that with anyone since you and I have been dating, and trust me, there have been opportunities - but when you're in a committed relationship you don't do those things.  Regardless of if your lonely or not - and definitely not with someones best friend."  He was letting himself get angry again.  "And what gets me the most is that you AND Rick hid this from me.  Our friends kept this from me."  Liz couldn't apologize enough and she continually swore it would never happen again.  She said, "Jon, do you really want this to come between us, break us up after all this time.  We have the prefect relationship and we love each other.  Do you think we can work this out?" Jon did not know what he thought.  He didn't know if they could work it out.  His heart says yes, while his mind and stomach say no.  He can't get passed the embarrassment he felt over the whole deal.  His girlfriend and one of his best friends - let's not forget the other friends that knew and said nothing.  Reluctantly, Jon said "I need to go, dinner is ready.  I'll call you back after I eat."  And he hung up.  With no intention of calling her back.

The rest of Jon's night was uneventful and he was glad he was able to get to bed early.  Feeling a little restless, he got out of bed and went  down stairs to have a cigarette.  Not being aloud to smoke in the house saves Jon alot of money in the winter months.  He slipped his boots on and grabbed a jacket and stepped out into the driveway.  Standing there having his cigarette, he notice a car driving by slowly - and was he NOT suprised when he seen it was Liz.  He stood there motionless, he didn't think she could see him.  As she passed, he ducked back in the house and told his parents, "If Liz calls, please tell her I ma not here.  She just drove by real slow."  His mom said, "Is everything okay, son?"  He looked at her as said, "I just can't let it go, mom?  I can't fogive her for doing that?  Either of them - any of them."  His mom, with her mortherly look said, "Honey, God says we have to forgive - we don't have to forget.

  1. Hmm, so now Liz is driving by his house to check up on him. Jon dump her because something in my gut says she is not right for you.
