Jon wipes the tears from his eyes and sits in the chair at her bedside, with her hand still in his. He notices that her wedding ring is gone and immediately presses the nurse button.
While he waits, he looks over the room, looking for it, hoping he would find it so the nurses wouldn't have to look for it or explain that they lost it. He doesn't see it anywhere.

A few moments later, an elderly lady appears and asks Jon, "What can I do for you, Mr. Bongiovi?"
"Do you know where her wedding ring went?" he asks her, with a sour look on his face. That ring means the world to him, and to Monica. It was Jon's grandmother's, given to him by his father for when he found the one. John and Jon both knew that Monica was the one, and when Jon was given the ring by his father, he knew that he had his approval to marry her - but no one guessed that they would do it in the middle of the night, away from everyone that they love.
The nurse walks up to Monica and pulls down on the top of her gown, slightly. She shows Jon, "It's right here dear, with the cross that she had around her neck." Jon stands to look, "I put it on a safety pin and clip it on so they have it close."
"Why were they taken off of her?" he questions, very flat and very unhappy. "She's never taken that necklace off since I gave it to her."
"We needed to when they had to shock her. Her ring had to come off due to the swelling in her hands."
He sits back down in the chair and rest his head in one hand, looking up at the grandmotherly nurse, he asks, "Can I have them?"
"Sure dear." The nurse starts to take the safety pin off of Monica's gown, handing it to Jon.
"Thank you."
"Will there be anything else?" she questions the young groom, with her heart on her sleeve; feeling so sorry for him and them. She wants to do what she can for the two of them. "Would you like me to bring you a cot? You look exhausted."
He shakes is head no, "Thank you though."
"If you need anything else, just use the button." she tells him as she leaves the ICU area.
Jon sits back in the chair and watches Monica sleep. In his mind, he plays the accident over and over, wishing he had been a second quicker to push her out of the way. He wishes he could have done anything to make the outcome not as bleak as it looks, at this point. His back and leg are killing him, he's gone days without pain medication and it's finally catching up with him. The doctor gave him pain medication and he tucked it in his pants pocket, remembering that, he digs it out and gets up to take it. He needed some relief, between the leg, back and now his head - pain management is a welcome thought.
Back in the chair he waits, he doesn't know what he's waiting for....her to open her eyes, move a muscle - anything really. He's lost in thought and unaware of what's going on around him. His gazed is fixed on her lips and his heart is broken, "Monica babe, if you can hear me, I'm right here and this is where I'm staying." He scoots the chair closer to her, and holds her hand again. "Our families are here and so are the guys. We all are waiting for you to wake up." He rests his head on her arm and feels terrified. He's never felt so scared or so alone in his life. His right hand, his best friend, his new wife is in a state that she should not be in. They should be living life and celebrating the fact that they were just married, not in a hospital praying that she will be okay.
Hours drag by and he stays at her side. His pain meds have kicked in and he starts to feel a little better. Relaxed, kicked back in the chair, he hears his mother, "Jonny?"
"Yeah, ma. We're in here." he answers out to her.
Mrs. B draws back the curtain a little and peeks her head in, "I'm just checking on you, son." He can see that his mother won't even look at Monica.
"I'm good ma. Why don't you and everyone go to your hotel. I'll call if there is any change."
She walks over to her son and runs her fingers through his hair, "I'm staying right here with you." She reaches over and pulls the empty chair close, "Put your leg up, honey. It has to be hurting you."
"I want to be alone with Monica mom." Mrs. B bends over and kisses her first born, her favorite son on the top of the head.
"I'll be in the waiting room, your dad needs to get some sleep. Richie and Alec are sound asleep on the couches in the waiting room and the others are pacing."
"Tell everyone to go get some rest." he tells his mom.
"Her mom wants to see her." Mrs. B states, "Should I send her back?
Jon nods his head, as he lift his leg up on the chair, "Yeah, but give me a while okay. Mon would want her back here."
His mother leaves the ICU area and Jon finds himself alone. He looks around the room and is suddenly hit with the odor. The smell is almost too much for him to take. It's a cold and scary odor, that doesn't even have a hint of happiness. The mustard yellow ceiling tiles have faded over the years, leaving the area drab and sad. Again, he finds himself in disbelief. How can they be in the intensive care unit when they are supposed to be celebrating their love for one another and celebrating the life that they just started.
It wasn't too long and Monica's mom appears. She whispers, "How's she doing?"
"No change."
"How are you doing, Jonny?" she walks up next to him and places a hand on his shoulder. Gently rubbing him, hoping that she's showing support when she herself is dying on the inside. Her baby, her baby girl is laying there hanging onto dear life.
Jon shifts his weight in the chair and takes his leg off the chair, "Sit down." He motions toward the chair. "I'm doing as well as can be expected. How are you?"
She gives a slight chuckle and says, "Probably as well as you."
"She's tough, she'll pull through this just fine. It's just going to take time."
Monica's mom places her hand on Jon's leg, "She is tough and she has you - she will pull through this."
"She has us. Why don't you go get some rest, I'll call if there is any change, you have to be exhausted."
"Why don't you get some rest? I'll bet you haven't slept in days."
"I'm good, I'm not leaving her side." he states, clearly. The thought of leaving her side never entered his mind, he won't leave her until she is awake and can kiss him. Or at the very least, give him the wink that she does when she is happy with him or something that he did for her. She loved the little things.
Monica smiles at him, "She loves you and I can really see why."
"I love her."
"I can see that too."
"She means the world to me and I don't know how I'm going to tell her about the baby. She is going to be devastated." He tries to rub the stress from his face and is overcome with grief, "this isn't the way it's supposed to be, we had it all."
"You will again, she just needs to heal and then you guys can start again."
"Do you think it will be that easy? She was so happy to be pregnant, she was the happiest I have ever seen her, the day we got married." It clicked with him that he may have just opened a wound for her mother that was just starting to scab, or maybe she set that pain aside to deal with the tragedy, but he could see that something was coming. It was all over moms face.
"Why did you guys run off and get married, had you waited all of this could have been avoided. If you weren't out here in Vegas, you never would have been hit by the car......"
Jon nods his head, as he lift his leg up on the chair, "Yeah, but give me a while okay. Mon would want her back here."

Whoa momma lay on the guilt, he's not in the right frame of mind anyway. it's like she's kicking a puppy. Now I can't wait for another chapter.
ReplyDeleteOh boy!! He had to know that was coming. But they also have to know it's none of their business. It's their lives and they can do what they want with.
ReplyDeleteWhoops. He opened the door on THAT one.
ReplyDeleteWill be interested to see what happens next.
Thanks. Good chapter.
People tend to second guess decisions especially when tragedy happens so I think its pretty normal that she is bringing this up. hopefully Jon will understand that but I doubt he will. more than likely he is going to dwell on it & blame himself for what happened. this is all just so very sad. I think they have a long road ahead.
