Chapter 12 - Lucky

Jon loved when he would wake up in the morning and he could hear his mother singing, down in the kitchen.  That usually meant that she had a big day planned and she was happy she was getting out of the house. 


Dragging his butt out of bed, he went right into the shower.  His day was going to be busy too, so a shower will help jump start the day.  Standing in the stream of the hot water, he thought about last night and how mean he was to Liz.  He didn't give that alot of thought, because he quickly remembered what Liz had done to him.  That didn't make it right, but he did get some satisfaction from it.  Jon wasn't one to sleep around and he's never been one to cheat, so he expects the same from the girl he decided to be with.  Johnny Bongiovi has never had any trouble with the girls and he certainly wasn't going to be treated like Liz treated him.  Maybe it was time to move on?  He was tired of trying to forget that she cheated on him with his friend.  He couldn't get the image out of his mind.  He couldn't understand how Liz could go on and act like nothing ever happened.  Has she not noticed that her and Jon have only had sex a few times since he found out about her indiscretion?

He has already given Liz too much thought this morning.  His mind quickly went to Monica.  Who is Monica and why is she calling me, he thought to himself.  Getting out of the shower, he can hear his dad telling his mother to have a good day, and goodbye.  Jon heard that and bolted to his watch, wondering what time it was.  He looks at the time, "Shit, I"m going to be late."  He hurries and dries off, throws on some Levi's and a t-shirt, grabs his socks and cowboy boots and heads downstairs.  Rounding the corner at the bottom of the stairs, he bumps into his mother. "Morning, Ma." he says and gives her a kiss, "Gotta go, I'm late."  And he proceeds to walk out the door, he just wasn't fast enough.

He heard his mother holler, "Johnny!"  He applies the brake and goes back into the house.  His mother is leaning on the kitchen counter, "Remember, you have to pick Matty up from school today.  I have my hair appointment at 3:00."

Jon totally forgot about that.  Rubbing his forehead, he says, "I forgot, but I"ll be there.  Will you tell him to hurry and not screw off in the hallway?  I have plans with the band tonight."  He kisses her again and leaves.  Mrs B. just stands there and smiles.  Her son was the light of her life, the sun in her sky.  He was going to go places

It was a cold morning and Jon's car wasn't heating up fast enough.  He might be a little warmer if his hair wasn't wet and he dressed for the elements.  But in the 80's you dress to impress, not for personal comfort.  Jon was freezing his ass off, as he crawled in traffic into New York City.  He kept looking at his watch, the minutes were flying by and he was gaining nothing in feet.  Traffic was terrible. 

Turning the dial, looking for a radio station , that was playing music, since he hated the radio ads, Jon rolled onto a station that was playing his song.  That got his blood pumping and put a smile on his face.  He loves that he was on the radio and he now had a band to back him up.

Finally arriving to work, almost 2 hours late, Jon ran into the studio and looked for Tony.  Tony was in a conference room with David Bowie and Jon though he was in trouble.  Was David in there waiting for Jon to run cables in his favorite studio?  Was David waiting for Jon to do something else?  He couldn't hide from them, they both seen him.  He knocked on the window and Tony said, "Get in here."  Jon opened the door and walked in.

"Hey, sorry I'm late.  I overslept and traffic was terrible." He hangs his head in shame and waits for Tony to lay into him.  Tony has reprimanded Jon in front of Elton John, Jefferson Airplane and a few other bands - and that made Jon want to crawl up in a ball and hide.  But Tony opted not to say anything about Jon's tardiness.  And Jon will soon find out why.

"Jon, Adam isn't here today. Can you fill in for him?" Tony asks his cousin to help him out, he's in a bind and now Jon sees why he didn't get in trouble for being late.

Jon smiles because that means that he is going to get to play with David Bowie.  "For rehearsal, of course, I would be honored."

David Bowie sits up and says to Jon, "I'm laying down tracks today.  I need this album recorded today.  The absence of your coworker fucks everything up.  Tony said you could play. Can you?"

Jon is wanting to die, on the inside.  He's going to get to record with David Bowie.  Is today his lucky day?  "I think I can play." Jon

David Bowie stands up and says, "Let's play."  And the 3 of them head into studio A.  David Bowies's favorite when he records at the PowerStation.  Jon runs around and hooks a few things up, puts a few things away and tells David that the studio is set.  David looks at Tony in the booth and does a circular motion with his index finger, telling Tony to roll the tape.  Dave leans over and picks up a guitar and hands it to Jon. "Play." he tells the young wannabe.

Jon puts the guitar on, plugs it in and turns the amp on.  The first song that comes to mind is, Smoke On The Water and he rips the cords.  Bowie is impressed and let's Jon sit in on the session.  He spent the day recording China Girl with David Bowie.
